The Symphony Orchestra of the Hungarian Radio

The Symphony Orchestra of the Hungarian Radio was founded on Ernst von Dohnányi’s initiative in 1943. The ensemble is known abroad under the name of Budapest Symphony Orchestra (BpSO).
Its main task is to transmit high-standard live music for radio listeners and the concert-going public.
Its repertoire comprises the entire music literature from the Baroque to our days. The ensemble is the greatest authority on contemporary music in Hungary. In addition to classical music it is also at ease in the interpretation of lighter genres. In the course of its existence the ensemble has established its place among the leading orchestras of the world with numerous concerts in and outside Hungary as well as with the broadcasts and CD recordings of almost the entire symphonic repertoire and oratorios. Its recordings include countless operettas and film music as well. The various formations made up by its members can meet the composers’ most specific musical demands. The recordings are made in studios equipped with the latest technology, satisfying modern requirements to the utmost.
Leading critics of the world as well as guest conductors, soloists and composers working with the orchestra praise unanimously its balanced sound, flexibility and music patronage done by popularizing and recording contemporary Hungarian music. As Hungary’s ambassador of music, it has enhanced the reputation of Hungarian music culture in more than fifty countries on four continents. It is a steady and highly acclaimed participant of Hungarian concert life and an appreciated guest of the most important concert halls of the world. Critiques and interviews emphasize unanimously the special skills and self-confident technique of the ensemble. 
The recordings and concerts of the orchestra have been broadcast by all important radio stations of the world. Besides, they regularly appear in Hungarian and foreign television programmes, in the finals and gala concerts of the international music competitions.
 
Their special individual sound has been established by its world-wide acknowledged leading conductors and chief music directors.
